Dr. 克莱夫·伍兹

Dr. R.C. 森林 moved to the University of South Alabama in 2016 as Associate Dean of Engineering 负责 研究graduate affairs. He was born in Leicester, 英格兰, 和 studied at New College in the University of Oxford where he earned Bachelor’s 和 Master’s degrees, 和 the Doctor of Philosophy degree for his original 研究 on magnetic resonance 和 related phenomena in rare earth metal alloys conducted at the University of Oxford’s world-famous Clarendon Laboratory. While still a 研究 student he was invited by the Clarendon Laboratory to tutor their postgraduate advanced quantum mechanics course. Next he worked on surface-acoustic wave signal-processing devices as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the University of Oxford’s Engineering Science 部门. Following this, he was Senior Scientist at Plessey Research (Caswell) Ltd.Towcester, specializing in semiconductor lasers 和 LED systems.

He was then a Lecturer 和 subsequently Senior Lecturer (positions widely regarded as equivalent to Assistant 和 Associate Professor respectively in the U.S.A.) in Electronic 和 Electrical Engineering at the University of Sheffield. During this period, his 研究 mostly concerned compound semiconductor devices. In 1989 he was awarded a British Association Fellowship, for several years he served as Associate Editor of the IEE Electronics 和 Communication Engineering Journal, 和 in 1995 he was Professeur Invité at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon, France. He was also a co-founder of the Sheffield MEMS Unit. He was appointed Full Professor of Electrical 和 Computer Engineering at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, in 2002. Moving again in 2006, he became the most successful 部门 Chairman in his 部门’s history when under his leadership his 部门 achieved its best-ever performance before or since. After he witnessed repeated unprofessional 和 unethical behavior by senior faculty 和 administrators at that institution, in 2020 the Institute of Electrical 和 Electronics Engineers appointed him to its Ethics 和 Member Conduct Committee which he chaired in 2022 和 2023.

In 2010 he was appointed Japan Program Director in the Office of International Science 和 Engineering at the world’s most prestigious 研究 funding agency, the National Science Foundation (NSF) located then in Arlington, 维吉尼亚州, 和 subsequently took additional responsibility for the U.S. collaborative basic 研究 programs in Korea, New Zeal和, Australia, Mongolia, 和 Taiwan. He also led the NSF CNIC program for catalyzing new international collaborations, 和 was a member of the NSF Optics 和 Photonics Roadmap working group 和 the International Science 和 Engineering Strategic Planning group. For his work at NSF he received the NSF Director’s Award for Collaborative Integration recognizing his “exceptional teamwork in representing a model for a truly collaborative activity across the Foundation involving science, 政府, 和 science diplomacy.”

In 2005 he was awarded the rare D.Sc. Higher Doctorate by the University of Oxford acknowledging his distinguished 研究 achievements in solid-state device engineering 和 other fields over many years, 和 in 2006 he was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering 和 Technology (formerly the IEE). His current 研究 interests include novel solid-state devices 和 device modeling; he has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed 研究 publications (plus a number of patents) in these 和 related fields. He is an invited member of the international awarding committee for Marie Curie Fellowships supported by the European Commission in Brussels 和 of multiple 研究 panels at the National Science Foundation now in Alex和ria, 维吉尼亚州. He is a member of the Editorial Board for several prestigious peer-reviewed 研究 journals including IET Nanodielectrics 和 Springer Nature/Light: Science & 应用程序, 和 is a Program Evaluator for the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering 和 Technology.

Also an accomplished pianist, he has played at many public concerts in both Europe 和 North America, including France, Germany, New York City, Washington D.C., Maryl和, the north of 英格兰, 和 London. He is particularly well-known as a soloist 和 as an accompanist for operatic 和 choral works. He has recorded two commercially-produced CDs, 和 continues to perform regularly in the U.S.A. 而在美国.K.. A theme he wrote was used in February 2010 as the basis of an improvisation by pianist Robert Levin at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 巴尔的摩.
